The first state-level medical history society to have a website. Our goal is to promote interest, research, and writing in medical history, and we are dedicated to the discussion and enjoyment of the history of medicine and allied fields.
The MHSNJ’s next monthly Zoom will be on Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00pm EST, with Dr. Dennis Cornfield presenting “Ladies First: The West Philadelphia Hospital for Women.”
"In an era when women doctors were denied privileges at most medical centers, the West Philadelphia Hospital for Women was founded by a small group of civic-minded women led by a woman doctor (Elizabeth Comly-Howell, M.D.). This presentation highlights the history of this hospital from its founding in 1889 until its absorption by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1965."
Dr. Cornfield is a long-time MHSNJ member who has previously presented on other Philadelphia medical institutions, and recently retired from practicing hematopathology for 22 years at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. The MHSNJ is delighted to host Dr. Cornfield to present on a topic befitting Women's History Month. Join us and come learn about Philadelphia medical history and women's history!
